ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE
Victoria Seeds Ltd was founded in 2004 for the purpose of delivering quality seeds to small–holder farmers in Uganda with the aim of improving yields and livelihoods.
At the time the founder Josephine Okot believed that the development and dissemination of high yielding
seed varieties was the primary technological force that can drive up crop productivity and
hence the need for a robust seed market in Uganda. Although she could not access start up capital
from a commercial bank because of no credit history, she did not give up. She secured a small bank loan
guarantee from a USAID Project -APEP for working capital . With that limited capital and a workforce of 5 people,
the journey begun. The source of the initial idea was the observation that yields achieved by Ugandan farmers
were much lower than that realized at research levels—at times one third lower. This underperformance is mainly attributed to the limited availability of improved quality seed and the absence of extension services
By 2018, Victoria Seeds Ltd has grown into Uganda’s leading seed house by asset.
The company achieved the distinguished ranking No 1 in Uganda in the 2016 Regional Index for Eastern Africa and ranking No 6 in the 2018
regional index primarily because of the innovative ways of making products available to small holder farmers.
